How to check for wear
A good axle sits firmly on the depth-adjustment arm and moves smoothly through its range, feeling like one solid piece. The common killer is seizure — grease combining with dust sets solid and the axle won't move without bars and hammers, so keep it clean and lubricated. Watch the O-ring at the flanged end: once it wears, dust gets in and grease weeps out past the spindle flange, and abrasion inside the axle takes off. On early 90-series axles, check the tack welds holding the cap to the arm haven't broken, as a loose cap compromises the triple-lip seal.
