How to check for wear
A good axle sits firmly on the depth-adjustment arm and moves smoothly through its range, feeling like one solid piece. The common killer is seizure. Grease combining with dust sets solid and the axle won't move without bars and hammers, so keep it clean and lubricated. Watch the O-ring at the flanged end: once it wears, dust gets in and grease weeps out past the spindle flange, and abrasion inside the axle takes off. On early 90-series axles, check the tack welds holding the cap to the arm haven't broken, as a loose cap compromises the triple-lip seal.
